ETACS PROJECT – EOD VR Workshop 2023

In partnership with 4Experience, the ETACS (EOD/IEDD VR Training and XR Combat Support Kit) project marked a significant milestone, completing its first year of development. Following this phase, the project hosted the inaugural "EOD VR Workshop" on November 28-29, 2023, at Hotel Magnus in Trencin, Slovakia. This workshop brought together experts from five different countries from the EOD community and Extended Reality (XR) specialization to support the advancement of ETACS.

The workshop aimed to:

• Gather EOD subject matter experts along with XR specialists to enhance ETACS development.
• Present and discuss the progress of the ETACS project in 2023.
• Establish an external expert team to continuously support ETACS.
• Identify challenges and plan the project's future direction.
• Workshop Highlights

The event commenced with presentations on Extended Reality and Virtual Reality, led by industry experts. This was followed by insights into EOD training methods from participating countries. The main focus of the event was the software of the ETACS project itself, starting with demonstrations and hands-on testing of the software using Oculus Quest 2 goggles. Breakout sessions allowed participants to analyze and provide feedback from both EOD operational and technical perspectives. Ideas for improvement were gathered and prioritized, guiding future development.

The workshop participants identified challenges specific to VR development for EOD training and fostered collaborative solutions as insights gathered will support the project's development in the coming year. Establishing an expert team ensures ongoing support and alignment with NATO standards.

In summary, the EOD VR Workshop 2023 was a pivotal event in advancing the ETACS project, facilitating collaboration between EOD specialists and XR experts to revolutionize EOD training through virtual reality technology.
