The Training Centre, Lest located in Slovakia organised an instructional and methodical activity that was held from 05 FEB to 09 FEB 2024. The activity was attended by the Slovak Armed Forces divers from the 901st Engineer Regiment, 5th Special Operation Regiment, 51st Wing. Using the opportunity, the NATO Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence (NATO EOD COE) representative, 2LT Erik KOSAR took place in the activity to maintain and improve his diving skills in a harsh environment.
Conditions in cold waters (the temperature range is about 2 degrees) in connection with diving in a closed environment, as well as the physical and psychological readiness of the individual, is very important. The ice diving activity task was covered by theoretical preparation regarding the risks and procedures for diving in a closed environment. After the theory, the material was checked and prepared for the next practical training. On Tuesday, the participants moved to Lake Velka Richnava, where the ‘buddy system’ was applied during the ice diving. Here, everyone practiced working with the reel, the light, underwater signals, working in pairs and, last but not least, crisis situations that could arise. Nowadays, it is necessary to constantly push the limits upwards. 2LT Kosar has mentioned that in the middle of the activity they moved to a new location of the flooded trench (Cavern) with a depth of 38 m, where the special theoretical preparation took place. The configuration of the equipment and the participants were divided into groups that were led by experienced cave divers. On the last day, divers tried to avoid the identified gaps which were outcomes of their previous dives.
Besides the diving drills itself, the participants observed that a personal exchange of experience is very important and literally invaluable. Thanks to this approach, the divers may acquire the best practices and do not repeat unnecessary mistakes, which could lead to fatal consequences.
